Scandinavian Glazed Earthenware Barselspotte

This rare antique Scandinavian glazed earthenware barselspotte (maternity pot) dates to the mid-to-late 19th century (circa 1850–1890), showcasing an exceptional piece of historic European folk craft. Traditionally used across Denmark and Sweden, these specific lidded pots played an essential social role in rural communities, where female neighbors and friends used them to transport warm, nourishing celebratory stews or porridge to families with newborn babies. Designed intentionally for travel, this striking country farmhouse vessel features a prominently high, overarching handle crafted to swing easily over a carrier’s arm, dual side grips for stable serving, a snug matching lid to keep food hot, and a clean glazed interior. A true collector’s piece, its cream-colored exterior is beautifully accented with festive, hand-painted earth-toned circular ring bands and soft green botanical accents, celebrating community support and new life with wonderful rustic character.
